FoHP April Garlic Mustard Pull at Hoyt Park

We had a great turnout for our April Volunteer Workday. The task at hand was pulling invasive species plants. Plants such as garlic mustard and dames rocket spread crowding out our native plants.

Volunteers from the UW-Madison Mercile J Lee Scholars service group and from the Madison Mycological Society joined FoHP members in helping to clear invasives from an area near Hoyt’s Ready Prairie.

Thank you to all who volunteered and made this a very successful day.

March FoHP Volunteer Workday

Thank you to all who came out for our first volunteer workday of 2026. Volunteers worked to prepare a firebreak in anticipation of the Madison Parks Department prescribed burns. The weather was unseasonably warm after a mid-March snowstorm but it was great to be outside enjoying Hoyt Park on a beautiful day. Working as a team makes the hard work easier and even fun.

The parks department will be conducting Spring burns in several parts of Hoyt Park this year in order to aid in the oak savanna and woodland restoration efforts at Hoyt. Burning in restoration areas discourages invasive woody plants while creating a better space for native shrubs and plants to survive.

The March woodlands may seem pretty devoid of new life but pops of green moss remind us that Spring ephemerals are not far behind.
